October 9th 2011 – If I Could Plan A Perfect Three Day Holiday…

“Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night”

Turkey fascinates me. Naming places like Istanbul and Ankara leaves me with a sweet, musky taste of spice in my mouth. But I find myself bound when I travel with company. Some trips I want to take alone..

I want to arrive in Istanbul early morning, just in time to see the sun rise over the glorious dome of the Blue Mosque and highlight the magnificence of the Sulaimaniya Mosque. The days have to be filled with walks over modern roads and old cobbled streets, through modern squares and old bazars…

And what will I see… Oh the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The Topkapi Palace with its museum of Islamic artifacts!. Istanbul’s covered bazaars and an evening at the Mehlevi Lodge to see the “whirling dervishes”.

I want to walk through palaces reflecting past grandeur and let m troubles wash away in a traditional hamam. I want to end my last evening in an old Turkish Tavern with the moonlight over the Bosphorus and the smoky sultriness of a dream…
